I've moved around a lot in my life, and I was wondering how many places I've lived with how many people. For a place to be included, I gave myself a three-month minimum.
1971-1978, Wisconsin: two houses
1978-1982, Nebraska: one hotel, one house
1982-1989, Colorado: one house
1989-1995, Missouri: three dorm rooms, two apartments, one house
1993, London, England: one shared flat
1995-now, Chicago: one women's residence, three apartments, one condo
Most moves in the least amount of time: four, from October 1995 to January 1998 (26 months)
Geographic location where I've lived the longest: Chicago (almost 10 years)
Physical home where I lived the longest: Colorado (close to 8 years)
If you're counting, that's 17 different addresses in 33 years. I know.
Not counting family, here's a partial list of people with whom I shared my living space (those who slept in the same room are in bold): Carla, Laurie, Kelly, Kathy, Becky, Andrea, Trista, Erin, Jamie, Allison, Rebecka, Tina, Ray, and Emily.
I say partial because I can't remember the name of the weirdo roommate--and her boyfriend who was over so often he might as well have lived with us--who lived with Allison and me last semester my senior year of uni. (I'm not counting the semester I spent at a boyfriend's.) Counting them, the total is 16. In London, I slept with three other women in an 8' x 8' room. I had the top bunk. I know.
I'm not sure what prompted this trip down memory lane. I was thinking about what makes a home and started reminiscing, I guess. I've lived on my own (no flat mates) since 1998, and I really really really like it. I'll share my space with someone someday, I suppose, but I love the fact that I don't have to worry about a roommate's one-night stand eating my cereal or when someone else's mother is coming to town. I have to worry about my own mother, but that's another story. Heh.
