Dead Horse Communications Well Positioned
For Upcoming Move

CHICAGO (August 23, 2004) -- The mood is electric in the offices of Dead Horse Communications, where the staff is coming down to the wire on the big move from its old Rogers Park headquarters to the new space in West Ridge. Boxes are piling up, final arrangements are being made, and soon all that remains will be to sign the paperwork and bring in the movers.

"We're well positioned for this move, our first in almost exactly three years," said Andrew Huff, principal with Dead Horse. "We got started fairly early, and unlike in previous moves, we did a little bit each night instead of packing it into just a couple of marathon days (no pun intended)."

Huff noted that other than bathroom items, the refrigerator contents and clothing, nearly everthing else has been packed. Movers have been scheduled for Thursday afternoon, with a professional cleaning service to follow through in the evening. In the new location, a delivery of appliances and visits from representatives of the various utility companies are lined up for Friday.

"The current owners of 6224 N. Bell were gracious enough to let us in two days prior to close to begin refinishing the floors in the upstairs unit," Huff said. "The floors hadn't been worked on in a couple decades, it appears, and were in great need of resufacing. The kitchen floor is currently covered with a dated linoleum, but we were pleased to learn that there should be hardwood floors in fine condition underneath. It's just a matter of tearing out the linoleum and refinishing the wood beneath."

The kitchen floors will likely be redone at concurrent with the planned cabinet and counter replacement, Huff said. That project is anticipated in the fourth quarter of calendar 2004. Another project is also scheduled for the same period -- a complete roof and gutter replacement and chimney repair.

Dead Horse Communications will be sharing the two-story building with its current office-mate, Poise.cc, a maker of fine purses, and an additional private firm. The 1920s-era brick two-flat offers complete facilities, including a semi-finished basement, landscaped greenspace and private garage parking for employees.

"It's hard to believe we'll be living in a new home by the end of the week," Huff said. "We've enjoyed our last three years at 1515 W. Arthur, and look forward to the next three at this new location."

Dead Horse Communications offers media, public relations and copywriting services for a wide range of industries. The company is headquartered in Chicago, with satellite offices on Ursa Minor Beta. Its better-known projects include Gapers Block, a Chicago-centric news and events webzine.

So what's up with calling this part of town West Ridge? Everyone says it's the offical name for this part of Chicago, but I grew up here and never, ever called it that. My mom also grew up here, and she never called it that, either. The term goes back way before anyone currently living... so now that you'll be over here, please help our cause by calling it West Rogers Park like the lifelong residents do. :)

There's history behind the name, of course, but it has always seemed to me that the consensus is to stick with calling it West Rogers Park. Just my 2¢ worth.

I do hope the next 3 years of equity-building are just as great as the last! :)

Christina -- I've been told it's West Ridge, West Rogers Park and West Edgewater (it's south of Devon, after all). We've started saying West Ridge mainly because it has its own identity, rather than relying on its proximity to another neighborhood -- people still won't know where we're talking about, so we'll probably just be resigned to telling everyone Granville between Damen and Western."

Heather & Lacey -- Thanks! We're loving it so far, now that we're no longer sore from the move.
